High Performance Computing

Core HPC infrastructure

IBU runs the IBU/BEFRI cluster, a joint HPC system located at UniBe and specifically oriented toward bioinformatics and statistical‑genomics analyses.

Bio‑oriented services and software

Beyond raw compute, IBU provides:

  • Production‑grade data pipelines for NGS and genomics (e.g., alignment, variant calling, RNA‑seq, ChIP‑seq, methylation, etc.), often optimized for their HPC environment.

  • Access to a comprehensive software ecosystem (toolkits, libraries, and custom scripts) curated for bioinformatics workflows, including containerized or environment‑managed tools.

  • Consulting and optimization support for HPC usage, including workflow design, cluster‑resource tuning, and performance‑bottleneck analysis for complex bioinformatics jobs.

Access and collaboration

  • Access to the IBU/BEFRI cluster is arranged via IBU staff; typically granted to Uni Bern–affiliated projects and collaborative bioinformatics projects (especially those involving NGS or genomics). Here is the link to register.

  • IBU staff can help with:

    • Study design and choice of appropriate analysis tools.

    • Setting up and running HPC‑based analyses on your behalf or jointly.

    • Training and supervision for students and researchers in using HPC for bioinformatics (e.g., as part of the Master’s program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology).
